Switch from Summer to Fall in 6 Simple Steps

As the leaves begin to change color and the kids go back to school, it’s time to refresh your home’s decor. Our interior designers here at CW Interiors put their heads together to come up with a few design tips for the fall season. These simple steps will help you make the transition from bright summer tones into warm, cozy fall palettes.

Soft Whites

Neutral palettes are amazing if you’re someone who is always changing their decor to match the seasons or holidays. Those white, cream, and ivory tones present the perfect backdrop for decorative accent pieces. However, we know not everyone has a neutral color scheme in their home. If that’s you, stick with seasonally neutral colors when transitioning between seasons. For people with more colorful palettes in their home, use white and cream accents throughout the space.

Pro Tip — A neutral color scheme paired with simple decorations will ease you into the new season without having to do a complete overhaul of your current decor.

Layered Textures

Bring the cozy feeling of fall into any home by layering textured pieces. However, try to avoid incorporating too many additional pieces to a room. You can add and remove decorations as needed until you achieve your desired look. For example, a blanket draped on the couch can bring the perfect amount of warmth to a room without going overboard.

Natural Elements

Fall always evokes feelings of being in nature: walking through trails, seeing the leaves change color, campfires, and so much more. Incorporate those natural elements into your home this season by decorating with apples, pumpkins, gourds, and wreaths made with leaves and acorns. Not only do these decor pieces bring in just the right amount of fall, but they’re easy on the wallet as well.

One of the easiest ways to make the transition from summer to fall is to swap out the fabric of your pillow cases, curtains, blankets, and rugs. Replace cotton fabrics with velvets, knits, and other soft materials. Your home will radiate with warmth and make any guest want to stay and get cozy! You can also take this opportunity to change up your accent colors to keep your home’s decor fresh.

When in doubt, a fall wreath is a great way to ease yourself into the fall season without having to do a lot of redecorating. A wreath with natural elements like acorns, leaves, and mini pumpkins is a great accent piece to hang anywhere in your home and will last the entire fall season.

Soft Lighting

As the nights get longer, it’s time to gather all of your candles and put them to use. Create a warm center piece by placing smaller candles in Mason jars and arranging them on a tray, or frame a mantle piece with larger candles placed on either side.

Remember to keep your decor simple this fall season. Make use of neutral colors and natural elements and your decor will easily last the entire season!
